By the Book
I normally write a newsletter aimed mainly at those whose hobby or business is Woodturning. With your permission, I’d like to take a little departure from that narrow audience and share a very powerful recent experience which can benefit everyone willing to listen.
This past week Sweet Janice and I were at a function where we were asked to share publicly what made our business successful at its core. My response was “wherever possible we operate by the book.” As lifelong entrepreneurs, we have had our share of failures but also more than our share of successes. One of my character flaws for at least the first half of my life was that I had much more courage than wisdom. I wasn’t afraid to take chances, but often I should not have and my family paid the price.
Later in life I was fortunate enough to discover a very rich source of guidance and wisdom and I read from those books of wisdom every single day. One of those passages reads “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed.” You will find this excellent advice and more in Proverbs 3:13-18 in our Holy Bible.
When I founded the Gwinnett Woodworkers Association in 1998, I structured it exactly the same way that one would organize a church and corresponding Sunday school classes with special interest groups for wood turners, scroll sawyers and computer programs commonly used in woodworking. We appointed captains over tens, hundreds and perhaps one day thousands. We installed the Board of Directors with its president. You are saying that is a business structure; where do you think that structure came from? Exodus 18:21 “Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.”
If you have ever visited my website and viewed the “Free Downloads” section, have you ever wondered why there is so much really good stuff totally for free? Why wouldn’t I just sell that information, or at least charge a subscription fee, or something? Here is my guide: Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” As an ordinary course of our business, we always try to be generous whenever possible while still being good stewards.
Most folks try to find a guidebook for living, some philosophy or model or structure that will bring them success in life. We have found there is no better guide than the Bible. Within its pages lie the secrets of the ages for health, joy, long life, prosperity, successful relationships, peace and love. So now you know the secret of our success, because wherever you go there you are.
